We were thinking of making new game controls for SMBO because we know many of you are uncomfortable with the current ones. This would be possible by making you have to press the "Enter" key first to type messages so the other keys can be utilized without interfering with chatting.

Some ideas we came up with were:

-WASD (and/or arrow keys) for character movement
-Number keys (1,2,3...,0) for Special Attack hotkeys
-Space Bar to jump

What we want is your feedback. Which controls would you be most comfortable with for each action? Would you rather have new buttons for attacking and jumping or do you like the old ones? Please post below because we need as much feedback as possible to ensure that our players are comfortable with the new controls. Thank you for your cooperation!

Honestly, I like the controls right now, I even use similar controls for my ZSNES. The hotkeys for the special attacks sounds nice though.

I guess I have mixed feelings about it.

First off, it'd mean we have to stop to type if we tried to use WASD to move. The arrow keys are fine as they are.

The hotkeys for specials would save a lot of time, such as to heal a player, you would just need to select them, then hit the appropriate button. Again, you may have to click out of typing mode to make the most of it, but it's manageable.

As for the last one, while I wouldn't mind a different key for Jump so that certain issues can be avoided, I don't think space would be a good idea, as thenwegetmessageslikethese, and we can't jump in typing mode. Might I suggest the Alt key instead?

Sadly, a lot of these keys require players to not type, ruining the social aspect of the game, such asking for help when in trouble, and so on. However, they can still be used effectively if they were programmed correctly.

The Alt key cannot be used for jumping because it brings up the game's file menu. Also, I don't think pressing Enter to type would ruin the social aspect that much; you can still move with the arrow keys in typing mode, and if you're in trouble just press Enter again to exit typing mode and escape or attack.

Hmm... Playing to much WoW made me get used to WASD lol.

about the hotbar, again in WoW i press the numbers to do spells so im kinda used to it lol.

And about jumping, i think space bar is a good idea to, since its basically the main jump button on online games.

So I think it would be a good idea!

I prefer ESDF, but meh.  WASD would be an improvement only if there were an easy way to switch between typing and control mode (maybe Tab, since that wouldn't be used in typing?).  I like the idea of Special Attack 1-0 hotkeys.  Various (customizable?) buttons on the right side of the keyboard could function as "attack", "turbo", "pick up", "jump", and "special badge" (and "current special", "rotate") buttons.

If you didn't know, I believe 2 of the "f" keys is a shortcut key to use HP and FP restoring items. It would be nice if this worked for special badges and special attacks, as mentioned before.

I like these new control ideas, espacially the special attack hotkeys. I agree with jdaster that tab should switch between typing and controling without sending your message. If  it was made like that I would like all of the other actions (except moving) to be near the tab button. eg. Q to attack, W to run, E to jump and arrow keys to move. That way you have to move your hands around so much.

In brief, Tab key to switch and customizable other buttons would probably be best.  I definitely prefer ESDF/WASD to arrow-keys for motion, as I'm used to controlling movement with my left hand in most other video games, and often cross my hands while playing through intense sections in SMBO (like trying to beat Kamek at level 29, lol).

I personally don't mind as long as theres Joy2Key.exe and a Joystick in my hand. But I have to say the controls are very unconfortable when playing in a Laptop keyboard.

I also think there should be a hotkey that lets you select yourself so it's much faster to perform SP. attack heals/buffs

maybe there should be two control modes that people can switch between in settings. each mode uses 1-0 as special attack hotkeys and tab to switch between typing and moving, attack ect. I also think there should be a set of buttons to scroll through the inventory and another button to use the item that the cursor is on

control mode 1: arrow keys = arrow keys(doesn't change) shift = Q ctrl = W delete = E end = R enter = enter home = F new functions: 1-0 = special attack hotkeys tab = switch between typing and moving, attacking ect. TFGH = scroll through inventory D = use item

control mode 2: arrow keys = WASD shift = \ ctrl = ] delete = [ end = p enter = enter home = L  new functions: 1-0 special attack hotkeys tab switch between typing and moving, attacking ect. arrow keys = scroll through inventory ; =  use item

I think pressing Enter to activate the Chat would be better, because for me, it would save time moving the arrow to click the chat box.

Hotkeys for skills would be nice.

Hotkey to select yourself would be nice, or even a typed command such as /you.

The hotkeys for Healing items are as follows:
F1 = Healing
F2 = FP Restore

I think that F3 should be the hotkey for SP restoring items, but thats just me.
