The base engine is complete! Penguin, jdaster, and Segatendo, PM me for it. Make sure you have Visual Studio 2010 Express or later and XNA installed. Open the solution, then just click Run to see what the base engine has (arrow keys to move, Z to jump). It's not too much, but I included a lot of detailed comments that'll hopefully help you guys expand upon it.

We are almost the same age and you already know how to code an engine. I'm jealous.
Well I would like to try using your engine, I have never used C# but if you say it's like C++ then it shouldn't be a problem for me. I'm not too skillful with programming but I'm a good learner and this could help me c:
Congratz Kimu, even with your busy life in college you still manage to pull out these surprises.

I'm glad you're interested, Garro!
The base engine is strictly for this project and isn't developed enough for you to be able to make your own game with it. If you would like to assist in developing the engine, send me a PM. Remember that the engine isn't for anything other than reviving SMBO to be better than ever!

It turns out you need Visual Studio 2010 installed to compile it, even if you have Visual Studio 2012. There's a free 30 day trial that you can download, and I think you can just download that trial and never use it and still have everything you need to develop the engine further.
Did anyone run it and/or take a look at the code yet?

not yet, winRAR is a pain to get for free (either that or my searching skills are poor) on my second computer which I moved most of my stuff to.

If it's a .RAR, use 7-Zip; it's free and pretty functional. I haven't gotten a chance to do anything yet, and I likely won't for another week or so, since I'm going to be working on a huge assembly project and out of town next weekend.

Simply go here: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htmDownload whichever version applies. It's completely free; if it tells you to register you can just click the X, but it only tells you that if you open up a compressed RAR file.

I don't see where the idea that WinRAR isn't free comes from aside from that rare to encounter message box. I've been using it for years and never paid a penny.

derp, I was thinking of winzip and messed up, because winZip used to be free but now I believe you can only use a free trial for it.
Anyways, now my computer is having an error whenever installing basically anything, which is "The endpoint mapper database entry could not be created," and it follows the folder location where it is trying to download it.

That's strange. I did a few quick searches on that error and it seems like it may take a bit to fix. I hope it gets resolved soon.

Yea, I'm gonna look into it once I get the time because it's stopping me from reinstalling everything I needed, like iTunes and other software.

I'm terribly sorry I haven't worked on this yet. I just fixed the installation problem today through a bunch of googling, a lot of free time, and some trial-and-error, so I should hopefully be able to see the engine starting on the weekend, if my schoolwork doesn't pile up and I don't have other things I need to do.

I don't see where the idea that WinRAR isn't free comes from aside from that rare to encounter message box. I've been using it for years and never paid a penny. I think this answer from Minkkh (3 years ago) answers well: They're relying on peoples honesty, which is almost non existent nowadays. A few must pay or they wouldn't stay in business but it's probably a very small percentage.
I would assume they haven't got the resources to enforce it and are happy to just tick along on the meagre profit they earn from honest people - sad really because it's a great program. Edit: Hmm, a friend of mine suggested this: Would it be possible to code the fan game in Java? I noticed some Mac users around.... I know they could use Wine, but then again, I'm not sure if running things on an emulator slows things down?
Either way, it would keep people from needing to download an extra program when on a Mac. Thoughts? (Also, I have no clue about the slowing down thing either)

Well, Java is notorious for not being very...friendly with experience programmers. Many of my friends at school who are completely fluent in programming different evolutions of C detest Java, and are not at all acquainted with it.
To be honest, I would never use Mac OS. Instead, I'd just install a windows OS on a macintosh computer.
