Title: Advertising for Super Mario Bros. Online
Post by: hydrakiller4000 on March 31, 2010, 01:07:47 am
The game has grown so much recently, but unfortunately, the community has not. We need to get the word out on SMBO so that more people will play. This will make the game more active and fun for everyone. Although we've advertised SMBO in many places, it hasn't been enough. We are asking you, the players, to help us out. We will reward players in-game for advertising SMBO somewhere. The rewards will vary, depending on how effective the advertisement was. Before you advertise Super Mario Bros. Online, please follow a few guidelines:

1) Do not advertise somewhere if advertising is not permitted
2) When advertising, please use proper grammar and spelling. We want to give off a good impression.
3) Include all of the following somewhere in your advertisement:
                - Name of the game (Super Mario Bros. Online)
                - Super Mario Bros. Online is a 100% free, 2D fan-made online Mario RPG
                - Super Mario Bros. Online is still in development
                - Website (www.supermariobrosonline.tk)
                - Forums (www.smf4free.com/forums/supermariobrosonline)

When you finish advertising somewhere, please post the link here on this topic so we can confirm that you actually advertised.

If you're advertising on a forum, you may want to copy and paste the text below and post it there instead of typing up your own post:

When and if I have time to get on SMBO again myself, I might formally advertise at a certain site or two that I figure it would be well received at.

Posted this recently, hopefully it'll attract some attention.  Considering there are "500" active members, I imagine you might get a few new players.  Don't know if you recall the name of the site from that webcomic that DavidDayton or such mentioned about a year and a half ago on the TMK Blog...

I like the ad you've made up, but there are a couple things I'd change. I'm not doing this to be that critical "I'm better than you" troll guy, but just because many people (like me most of the time) are lazy and would just use the pre-made ad you've provided:

Quote
Other features include:

-6 playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, and Toad
-Over 130 playable maps
-Daily Event
-Favors (Quests)
-Fully functional friends list
-Steal the Shroom (fully functional Capture the Flag script with teams, waiting rooms, points, etc.)
-Fully functional, advanced Ammo system (reloading, different ammo types, etc.)
-Enhanced Trading System
-Easy personal messaging system
-? Blocks (you can hit them!)
-Respawn points
-Randomized damage
-Unique level up system
-3-frame movement It's a big step up from a lot of static MMOs I play, but it doesn't really sound impressive on paper.
-Enhanced NPC Talk System sorta a standard thing for MMORPGs
-Working party system I wouldn't use the word "working", makes it sound kinda like "eh, it's functional"
-Enemy Card System
-Moveable inventory items Cool, not really a bullet-point feature
-Switch between a turn-based battle system and an action battle system
-Cooking (works just as it does in the Paper Mario series)
-And much more!

As beta features these are all great things to know, but I wouldn't see myself getting excited over some of these features in an ad. I hope this isn't coming off as rude or anything, just trying to help.

Anyway, I'll probably be advertising around the SMF forums, and maybe seth's forums (basically another SMF forum). In my experience, advertising works better when it's sincere, and you're talking to people you know, as opposed to entering any mario forum and advertising. Not knocking anyone who has or wants to use that method, this is just my limited personal experience.

3 frame movement is rare on eclipse engines, and the NPC talking its new theres a pic of someone talking right next to the speech, it was a new update of talking

No, I understand that. They're great things for the engine, I understand. However, IMO, they just don't sound that impressive on paper. Maybe that's the point, like to try and attract people who are knowledgable enough to understand how cool these things really are, while filtering out most of the spammers?

Yeah, I fully understand what you mean, BLD. I'll try to word some of those features differently. Thanks! I just took out some of those things in the first post because they weren't that important in attracting people to the game, and they can be covered under the "And much more!" bullet.

Just created a comunnity at Orkut for people to know te game well.  ;)
I also put everything in portuguese, as it's my main language, and this should attract more Brazillians to the game (although I know a lot of brazillians in game). I also put the banner. This should help alot, but I think you guys can't see it because it's on the Brazillian Orkut, so ill take a pic and post it here, showing that it's truth.

can I set the advertising banner as my signature on this forum and other forums too?

Title: Re: Advertising for Super Mario Bros. Online
Post by: Kimimaru on January 21, 2011, 02:32:38 pm
Well, you're welcome to do so, but setting it as your signature on other forums may lead others into thinking that you're the creator of the game. If you want, you can make a little bar that says something like "SMBO Player." I'm not sure how to do that, but I usually see stuff like that around.

Title: Re: Advertising for Super Mario Bros. Online
Post by: Penguin4478 on January 21, 2011, 02:57:13 pm
so that means I could have the picture above and below I could say something like "Penguin4478-lvl 60 yoshi-A dedicated player for 1 year" or something like that?

I think it would be fine if you had the banner in your signature, but below it, you can simply put "A dedicated player" or something like that. If you want to include more details (for example, your character name), you're welcome to do that.

The site on the banner is no longer accurate. Just to point it out. I suggest that you change it to the new one, or to the Forum Link, mainly because of new people typing in that link, finding a broken site, and thinking the game has finished and ended long ago. You wouldn't want to confuse new possible players, would ya?

EDIT: Also, Fire Mario isn't even in SMBO XD I suggest fixing that, or adding him to it. Hopefully the latter XD

1. Razz has a point there, I immediately noticed that.
2. Going back to exactly what hydra said in the first post of this thread, where the community isn't growing but the game is, I think we should get to advertising more, and even possibly make a new banner, especially since the game's somewhat inactive as of now. Getting more people through stronger advertising might be a way to enlarge the activity of the game.

Anyone know any good sites where a lot of mario gamers hang around?

Mario Fan Game Galaxy, and the shy guy kingdom.

Actually you could post SMBO in MFGG's Game library. Or could also participe in NCFC contest that take place every end of the year.

That's a good idea...

Sadly enough, most of the forums where I advertise (ICU Gigasoft, and others like so) generally ignore the topic that the game even exists...

How were other mario fan-based MMORPGs using eclipse so popular?

Believe me ICU Gigasoft is way more death than here. Place like that forum, its member are because of their owner games, you need to find place where member looks for games, like MFGG or the NCFC

I havnt seen any Mario game popular, at least no more than 40 members.

I believe about a year or so ago, there was a Mario MMO I was occasionally playing, and it had a little less than 10 members online whenever I got on. I was referring to something like that.
